Why Kenni asked that he meet him here tonight he didn’t understand. But, he would find out soon. He just hoped it wasn’t anything too serious. He prayed it didn’t have anything to do with the upcoming tour. It would crush the rest of the crew if anything went wrong. It was their big break and all their energies were focused on ensuring it was a resounding success all round.
But, Kenni had sounded urgent over the phone.
“Let’s talk. 11 p.m at The Cave.”
That was all he said before hanging up. He never even gave him a chance to ask what was up.
So, here he was at the bar at 10.45 p.m. to talk with their manager. As he entered The Cave, his eyes quickly scanned the entire bar and the set tables – a long-established habit of his picked up while in school. Satisfied all was well, he proceeded to approach the bar. He will order his drink and find a table to wait.
After placing his order he settled down at the most exterior end of the bar and waited. To while away the time, he engaged some of his buddies on twitter and BBM. Kenni had a notorious habit of making people wait for him at any appointment, so he wasn’t banking on him showing up early. At least not in the next thirty minutes.
“Hello….” The voice was not that of Kenni. Warily, he lifted his eyes to meet the most beautiful pair he had ever seen. They were the faintest shade of blue. He looked behind her to see if Kenni was hiding and trying to play a trick on him.
There was no Kenni. Just this apparition of an angel standing before him and smiling brightly.
“I spotted you from up there,” she pointed towards the exclusive members’ only section of the club. It was where the big boys congregate – Them and their girls.
“Yeah…exclusive club,” he didn’t mean it for his voice to be surly or resentful. But, he also didn’t want her to feel he was all there for her taking. By her way of introduction, she had shown herself for what she truly was. She was with some other guys but was out to corner some more game for herself.
The life of the insatiable huntress.
“Well, errr….yeah. I came to say hi,” this made him arch his brows in mock surprise. Maybe he was wrong.
But, what was she doing up there?
He put aside his phone and gave her his full attention. It was the least he could do, She could be a fan for all he knew.
“ I saw you come in and you looked familiar. I can’t place where…or when but….anyways, my name is Anu. This may sound lame, but I do feel like I have met you before.”
Definitely a fan then.
But, what was a nice looking girl like her doing with them ugly set up there?
He glanced up again at the group on the upper floor and then back at her. Maybe, just maybe he had a chance tonight.
He offered her a seat, but she declined and left him a card instead before hurrying away.
And the back view he was presented with in the dim lighting was full of promise.
Contrary to type, Kenni had arrived a few minutes after and had asked them to step out of the bar.
Outside, he had led the way to his car and it was not until they were secure inside before he started talking.
“Doobi, some of the UNICEF boys are not happy.”
His heart made a double flip somersault.
Oh No!
He slumped against the seat. It was all over then even before it even started.
“Wait now…it is not all that bad. Well, there had been talk about how you guys have abused substances. The info had filtered to the foundation. I was called in earlier this evening to discuss the issue. I denied everything,” he heaved a sigh of relieve and moped at his sweating brow, Kenni continued looking warily at him, ”however, you boys have to lay off the heavy stuff. At least till the end of the tour, okay?”
He felt like kissing Kenni.
“Sure, you got it Boss.”
Their business that night was over quickly.
A promise had been extracted; a promise had been made.
